COMPETITION DIVISIONS
MEN’S UNDER 40

Any bow style. Competitors between the age of 18 and 40.

MEN’S 40 – 49

Any bow style. Competitors between the ages of 40 and 49.

MEN’S 50 & OVER

Any bow style. Competitors 50 year of age and older.

WOMEN’S

Any bow style. Open to all competitors 18 years and over.

WHAT TO EXPECT

5K WEIGHTED PACK RACE

Strap on a loaded pack and cover five kilometers of mountain terrain, gaining nearly 1,000 feet of elevation. Your pack race time feeds directly into your overall score — so show up fit.

3D Archery Course

A winding course through Winterplace’s terrain. Real shot angles, real shot situations, and…cough cough…you may not want to be 100% reliant on your rangefinder.

HEAD-TO-HEAD BRACKET

March Madness-style moving from double eliminations to single elimination. Before each shot you’ll complete a fitness challenge — sandbag carries, sled drags — then step up and make the arrow count.

Registration for the 2027 Appalachian Bowhunter Challenge event will open in Winter of 2026. Until then, train your mind, body and gear!

Your entry fee covers the full competition, a competitor packet including a shirt sticker, hydration packs, and — thanks to our sponsors — a full-year MTN TOUGH fitness platform membership for every registered competitor.

The field is intentionally kept small to maintain the quality of competition and the camaraderie that makes this event what it is. The 2026 event had 50 competitors. Expect similar numbers in 2027 — register early.

We allow any compound and traditional bow setups. But what you start the weekend with is your setup through the competition – no changing bows / sights / arrows. No crossbows.

Male competitors are required to carry a pack with a total weight of 25 lbs. Female competitors are required to carry a pack with a total weight of 15 lbs.

Yes — Winterplace Ski Resort has on-site lodging options. We recommend booking early as availability fills up. Details and a lodging discount code will be included in your confirmation email after registering through RunReg. You can also find lodging information here.

Refund and cancellation policies are managed through RunReg. Please review their policy at the time of registration. If you have extenuating circumstances, reach out to us via the Contact page and we’ll do our best to work with you, however please note there will be no refunds after 14 days from the event start.
